Synopsis
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, Salamanca owes its fame to its university, one of the oldest in Europe.
From the magnificent Baroque Plaza Mayor to the Gothic Casa de las Conchas, from the Jesuit church of La ClerecĂa to the New Cathedral, where Late Gothic and Churrigueresque Baroque styles blend, the city offers a journey through the eras of Spanish art.
The old cathedral, meanwhile, houses an exceptional pictorial treasure: a large altarpiece with 53 panels painted by the Della Robbia brothers, a direct precursor to Michelangelo's Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel.
