Mustapha Kemal, known as Atatürk (the father of the Turks), transformed the Ottoman Empire in ways European states had failed to.

He challenged the country's history by overturning the foundations of a society governed by religion and the caliphate. He aimed to modernize Turkey and make it adopt a more Western and secular model.

But wasn't he also what some would have called "a good dictator"?
