Synopsis

Albert I, who reigned over Monaco from 1889 until he died in 1922, spent nearly 30 years traveling the world's seas.

He initiated the primary oceanographic campaigns of the late 19th century. He made Monaco an innovation center, organizing one of the first seaplane meetings and the flight of a prototype helicopter. Albert I was also one of the first to alert people to the need to preserve the environment.

A fervent pacifist, he intervened personally with Kaiser Wilhelm II to avoid the First World War.
