Synopsis
The Brazilian military dictatorship lasted twenty-one years. Officially, it claimed 434 lives, a figure that does not account for the more than 20,000 people who were tortured, including Dilma Rousseff, who later served as the country’s president.
Brazil is the only country in Latin America that has not brought its perpetrators to justice; they were granted a definitive amnesty in 1979.
This report follows the work of the National Truth Commission, its progress, its limitations, and what remains to be done for the victims and their families.
