Synopsis

First a royal consort, then a regent, Hatshepsut proclaimed herself pharaoh even though her nephew Thutmose III was already on the throne. How did she manage, under these circumstances, to rise to supreme power?

She dressed and lived like a man, yet preferred architecture to warfare and commissioned the construction of a one-of-a-kind ceremonial temple at Deir el-Bahari.
