The Comoros form an archipelago of four small islands that lie between the Coast of East Africa and the northern tip of Madagascar.
With very little influence from the outside world, the wildlife on these islands has been left to evolve freely and they now harbour many unique species.
One of them is an enormous black bat with a wing-span of over five feet, Livingstone’s Giant Flying Fox, named after the famous British Victorian explorer who was the first to collect them.
Their origin is a mystery. In Livingstone’s time the skies were said to be “black with giant bats”.... Today less than 600 remain.
